Personal post here, but first things first: I believe proper credits are due. This is something I did in March-April 2016 based on the setup of Jay Russell a.k.a. The Photo Fiend, a brilliant self-taught creative portrait photographer based in Calgary, Canada. At the time I did not (and still do not) personally know anybody who uses such a device, so obviously the novelty factor was very high when I saw it for the first time in Jay’s pictures on 500px. As a disclaimer, I do not encourage anybody to attempt such a build without solid experience is using tools and power tools as well as the assistance of an expert in electric wiring.
It was the warmth and the softness of this light that attracted me to it in the first place. It’s the lighting equivalent of a thick soft blanket wrapping comfortably around you on a cold winter morning, when all you want around yourself is just tea and silence. And a blanket. But what do I know, I’m not a morning person…
The build itself took me several (relaxed) hours spread over the course of a weekend at the countryside. It was a pleasure working in the open air on a sunny spring day, even more so as I got to team up with my dad who was all happy to help.
The pictures here were by no means intended to be published some day. I took them merely for my archive and didn’t really bother with composition or settings. But now looking through my archive I got a bit extra happy to see the evolution of something made with my own hands so here they are.
Thanks for taking the time,
T
