In early 2016 Ana approached me for a set of what I call ‘serious pictures’. After finishing that, I asked her if we could try something a bit different, inspired by some pictures I had seen on BREED recently. It was a set of moderately-edited black&white studio shots. A natural look. A casual attitude. Something just as far from the RBF of the 2000s as it was from the warm, emotional looks of real art photography. Did we end up doing that? Of course not.

Just like it often happens in music, this was one case when I knew how I wanted the end product to look even though I sometimes found it hard to put it into words, and worked our way through. Lucky for me, Ana is one of the warmest, easiest-going people I know so she showed me exactly what I needed to get the essence of ‘her’ into this set of pictures.

This is all her; not so much me; not so much BREED.

And this was the start of a portrait series that is very dear to me: the Ring shots.
